What is Breathwork?
The type of Breathwork is called “Body-Connected Breathwork” and is one of the many breath techniques that stem from the lineage of Holotropic Breathwork.
The breathing portion always begins lying down with eyes closed. Practioners are invited to bring eye masks, blankets, pillows, or anything that will make them more comfortable while lying down. Please note that I play loud music during the class which is intended to be a big part of the experience. If you are not ok with loud music please bring your own ear plugs and set up your mat further away from the speakers.
I usually begin every journey with a grounding meditation and an invitation into the felt sensations of the body. The first part of the Breathwork journey is intended to be ACTIVATING. We are intentionally and safely taking our bodies into a state similar to the state we are in when we experience stress or even trauma. We are activating our sympathetic nervous system. We are allowing any unprocessed information or emotions from the body to be felt, expressed, and (if ready) released. During this time, practitioners are encouraged to make any noises that feel intuitive to them; to let tears or laughter or yawning or coughing or sneezing happen if it wants to; to sit up or stand up or shake or dance around on their mat. Anything goes as long as they stay on the confines of their own mat. I usually also includes a few breath HOLDS upon which I invite practitioners to scream or shout or roar as they exhale.
The second half, or the finishing piece of the journey is to integrate and invite in SPACE, EXPANSION, LOVE, GRATITUDE, or whatever may resonate for the practitioner in that moment. We then shift to a slow, deep breath with longer exhales to drop back into the para-sympathetic nervous system. This is a time for grounding, settling, and recieving. During this time, I often have a sound practitioner providing live sound (drums, singing, handpan, etc.) or I will be playing my crystal sound bowls and percussion tools.
I want to be clear — every journey is different for every person every time. It is SOMATIC WORK and it is a 100% experiential practice. You are welcome to come with INTENTIONS, but try to leave your EXPECTATIONS at home :) In my humble opinion, if you can allow the breath to do what it’s innately intended to do, it is the guide to bring you exactly what you need for your greatest healing and the next layer of your own awakening. The breath is a mirror to help you REMEMBER who you truly are.
Some common benefits experienced from Breathwork include:
-The gentle release of trauma

-Breakthrough insights

-Transcendental or 'Mystical' experiences which completely transform ones consciousness and the way one experiences life (this is reported in about 10% of breathers)

-Healing and letting go of painful relationships
-Physical healing
-Relief of some psychosomatic symptoms
-A reset for the nervous system
-Decreased inflammation in the body
-More mental clarity
-More confidence and a higher happiness set-point
What this type of Breathwork is NOT
This is not Pranayama exercises. This is not a workshop where we learn and practice different breath techniques. This is intended to be 100% experiential. The focus is less on the actual breath technique and more about your journey inward; it is more about where the breath takes you.
